Reiki

Reiki was developed by Mikao Usui in Japan in the early 20th century when, legend has it, he discovered the healing method after three weeks of fasting and meditation  on Mount Kurama near Kyoto.

Reiki is based on the ancient Eastern belief that 'Ki' energy flows through all living things and is essential to good health and wellbeing.  Reiki works to ensure that the Ki is able to flow freely through the body to restore and maintain balance.

Reiki practitioners are trained not only in the actual healing method, but also in a lifestyle and belief system based on Usui's teachings, most commonly epitomised by the quote:

"At least for today, do not be angry.
Do not worry.
Do your work with appreciation.
Be kind to people."

The Reiki treatment does not require the recipient to actively follow, or even agree with these sentiments!  Although a very spiritual treatment, Reiki does not impose a set of beliefs on the recipient and benefits people from all backgrounds and faiths.

The treatment

A Reiki treatment is non-diagnostic, non-interventionist and non-manipulative.  There is no need to remove any clothing as Reiki energy passes easily through all materials, including plaster casts.

It usually consists of the recipient lying or sitting in one position, whilst the practitioner places their hands in a sequence of healing positions on or around the body.  There is no pressure applied to the body and in some cases, the recipient's hands only hover above the recipient.

The immediate effect of the treatment is deep relaxation.  Some people fall asleep, others see colours, some even report feeling a gentle warmth or tingling throughout their body.  Of course, everyone and every treatment is different!  the energy will continue its work after the session ends and the benefits may be felt for several days afterwards.
